A 8" weld on cleat from Globe Foundry in Vancouver.

May 10 1999 4 hour: More Weldout

May 11 1999 2.25 hour: Weld in port stateroom hatch framing.

May 13 1999 2 hour: Weld in port forward hatch framing.

May 14 1999 6.5 hour: Cutout davit parts and welup lower bits. Big taper on 9" pipe.

May 19 1999 3.25 hour: Cut fit and weld port forward mooring post and bridal chainplate.

My assistants Jack and Jig and a ball bearing press in the SS bushings for the chainplates

Crosby shackles, chainplate design load 48,000 lbs.

May 21 1999 6.5 hour: Weld mid deck hatch covers on and put in port rain catch at mid seam and start takin wows of of mid deck. Using weight to hold down up buldges then putting lightweight support under decks then allowing to spring back in and tacking up. Mostly prevents tbar from twisting from the wows. Nice and solid and pretty decent looking.

May 22 1999 8 hour: Put on port bow trim and port foredeck drain. Weld about 10' of final pass of knuckle. gotta chop back to clean material or it can be drossy. Trimmed transomes to final shape. Cut davit bits. Fit and layout cockpit cubby holes for breaking.

Bringing home a Polyform F13 fender on the MV Quinsam enroute to Gabriola Island. This fender is a bit on the large side but it was a steal at Can$100.00. West Marine flogs this for US$499.00 ( But if you want one have them match Defender's price of US$320.00.... what a rip West can be )

This used fender has an interesting bit of history to go with it. Picked up by a Canadian warship of the US west coast.

May 23 1999 11 hour: Level boat ( again). Loft transom step details on hull. Fit, fab and weldout port transom. Used 9" pipe to radius the edge of the swim grid. Cut out fabbed and welded mos of the boardig ladder. ( the coast guard required 'reboarding device' ) This is also from 9" pipe bits and is a 4 step divers type ladder with a central support and open rungs off the sides. The ladder tilts up to match the transom slope. Some more work on wows in mid deck.

The transom detail and the support for the boarding ladder. Ya gotta love metal, try engineering something like the ladder and its support in wood or glass or whatever.

May 24 1999 7.5 hour: Mostly finish the boarding latter except the covers on the ends of the rungs. Kinda neet using the ladder to get in and out of the boat while fitting the rungs out on the ground and then climbing back in and shipping the ladder to weld on more bits then replacing the ladder to climb out. Layout transom steps and swim platform for break work.

A bit of scale

May 25 1999 1.5 hour: Bend 2' hatch frame. Bent it the 2x2 angle cold and it worked well. started on 18" hatches and the first bend fractured. ... nuf for today.

May 26 1999 3 hour: Looked over the 2x2 stock. It is different from what I have received in the past. Old stuf was extruded by Columbia Pacific and had a fillet in the inside corner. This is no name and has a sharp corner. It probably just barely meets specs for elongation where the CP stuf probably well excedes it. The TBar I got was CP and the certs with it had about double the elongation of the spec for 6061 T6. ..... Heated and bent 3 18" hatches with no problems.

May 29 1999 10 hour: Fit and weld exterior of prot swim platform bottom step. Fit and weld and tack port and stb cockpit cubby holes/speaker enclosures.

May 30 1999 9.5 hour: Fit and weld exterior of main transom steps port side. Weldout most of cubbies. Start on stb transom. Just down to a half tarp on port hull.

May 31 1999 .5 hour: Chunkout windlass gear wheel from 3/4" plate. small pirana blade works well on large stuf but is already missing 4 teeth.

June 1 1999 1.75 hour: Drill base of teeth on windlass gear. Cutout teeth and clean up centre of gear.

June 2 1999 2.25hour: Weld most of outside seam of cockpit stern. Difficult welding overhead onto 60 degree V edge. Cleans up ok.

June 5 1999 9 hour: Start seam testing eith blowgun and soap bubbles. Fit gear to spindle and cutout bow ladder sides.

June 6 1999 5 hour: Weld in additional strinngers in mid deck sproingy area. Weld up some bits and cockpit lockers.

1398 hours to date.
