Marquesas Islands

Sailing Directions:
The 'Iles Marquises' are composed of three fairly distinct groups that lie in a general SE to NW direction. The SE group consists of Futu Hiva, Motane, Tahuata, Hiva Oa, and Fatu Huka. The central group consists of Ua Pou, Ua Huka, and Nuka Hiva. The NW group is formed by Eiao, and Hatutta. All of these islands have the same aspect, they are high with abrupt and steep cliffy sides, with few good anchorages. The islands are of broken irregular form, and may be seen at a distance of 50 miles in clear weather. The administrative authority resides at Baie Taiohae in Nuku Hiva. Landing is not permitted on any of these islands until pratique has been obtained from the administrative authority.

Points of Interest:
There is a lot of bird life and abundant fish and shark populations. This is the burial site of Paul Gaugin, the French painter. Maurice's bar and store is located at Taiohae Bay , Nuku Hiva.
