Society Islands

Sailing Directions:
'Iles de La Societe' are divided into two groups, know as 'Iles du Vent' (Windward Islands) and 'Iles Sous le Vent' (Leeward Islands). Iles du Vent is composed of Meetia, Tahiti, Moorhea, Tetiaroa, and Maiao. Iles Sous le Vent consists of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora-Bora, Atoll Tupai, Maupiti, Atoll Maupihaa, Atoll Manuae, and Atoll Motu One. All of these islands except Tetiaroa, and those at the W end of the group, consist of high volcanic mountains surrounded by coral barrier reefs. Currents in the vicinity of Iles de la Societe have no constant set. Except in their coastal waters, the current follows the direction of the wind. Easterly winds are the most frequent; consequently, W currents predominate; its rate depends upon the strength of the wind.
